Website Redesign Direction

The site currently live at tracetechnical.co.uk (digital-home/frontend/) is the old website. A full redesign and reformat is planned. The build has not started — this article is the settled direction for when it does, not a description of anything currently live.
Build Isolation (hard rule)
- Nothing from redesign work is ever pushed, committed, or overwritten onto the live site. The old website keeps running unchanged until Glen says otherwise.
- No layout, section, or page structure is cloned or ported from the old website into the redesign. The old website is not the design reference here — it is what's being replaced.
- Every website design task in the redesign uses Impeccable. The default sequencing is the
/design-cycleskill (.claude/skills/design-cycle/) — critique, targeted fix, re-check, run per section as it's built and then once more on the assembled page. A heavier multi-critic loop exists as a concept for a single hero asset if one's ever needed, but it isn't the standard rhythm.
Design Process
Every website design task in the redesign, including any new page, follows Impeccable's context workflow, in this order. It runs once for the redesign as a whole, not once per page.
/impeccable init— once. CapturesPRODUCT.md: platform (web), users, purpose, positioning, evidence, brand commitments. Informed by Positioning and this article, not invented fresh — the interview should draw its answers from settled canon, not generic assumptions./impeccable document— once, right after init. GeneratesDESIGN.md(colours, typography, component treatments, radii, elevation, design rules) and.impeccable/design.json(auto-generated structured metadata — never hand-edited). ReviewDESIGN.mdagainst reality and correct anything that doesn't match, especially the two hard rules that aren't negotiable regardless of what a generic design pass would suggest: no photography, and nothing cloned from the old website.- Per-surface config, generated by the work itself. As each page gets built, Impeccable writes
.impeccable/surfaces/*.mddocumenting that page's mode, job, proof sequence, and chosen direction. Don't hand-author these ahead of time — they come from doing the work.
Mode: every Trace public page is Persuade — the visitor is there to decide and act (book a call, pick a service), not to operate a tool or read documentation. Mode comes from what the visitor came to the page to do, not from what kind of company Trace is, but for a one-person consultancy selling services, that's every page, not just the homepage.
Scope commands to one surface. /impeccable polish the Range Review page, not a blind whole-site pass — the judgment that changes Impeccable's output most is what the visitor on that specific page came to do.
Maintenance, ongoing: re-run init only if the audience, positioning, or platform actually changes. Re-run document only if the palette, components, or rules change. If it's unclear whether context has gone stale, run /impeccable doctor rather than guessing. Treat PRODUCT.md and DESIGN.md like any other design artifact — review them when they change.
This context step happens before the /design-cycle skill's per-section and per-page review cycle, not instead of it — context capture and the build/critique loop are two different steps in the same process.
Tone and Voice Direction
This is now the live tone and voice direction for the whole business, not just the website — see Voice Guide's Core Direction, which this article informed. It replaced the previous dark-arts persuasion mandate for public copy entirely: there is no persuasion-licensed register anymore, on the redesign or anywhere else.
Inspired by the Musk/X communication approach (Tesla, SpaceX, xAI): a capable, opinionated, high-agency person explaining something important directly to another intelligent person. Confident without arrogance, ambitious without empty hype, precise without being clinical.
- Restrained, not decorated. No unnecessary decoration, no corporate fluff.
- Product and mission primacy over persuasive rhetoric. The work and the method do the convincing; copy doesn't have to work hard to compensate. For Trace specifically, since there's no product to photograph the way a car or a rocket carries a page, primacy means leading with proof and specifics (real numbers, real boundaries, real detail) rather than visual spectacle.
- Short, clear, declarative language. Say the thing plainly. Simple, accurate words over inflated ones.
- Ambition grounded in demonstrated capability or first-principles logic. Bold claims are fine when the reasoning or evidence is right there with them, never floating free of it.
- Respect for the reader's intelligence and attention. No hand-holding, no over-explaining the obvious, no padding.
- Minimal reliance on traditional marketing language. Persuasion is secondary to clarity and demonstration.
- Personality and brand image are not lost — they're layered in after content is secured, never before. Get the substance right first; the voice and creative texture come after, not as a substitute for it.
Visual Direction
- No photography anywhere on the redesigned site. No stock imagery, no product photography, no lifestyle imagery.
- Smart, AI-friendly abstract graphics instead — soft gradient/blob-style graphics on solid colour grounds, in the vein of x.ai's news-card imagery (reference shown by Glen 2026-08-16: dark and coloured cards, each carrying a smooth abstract gradient swirl, no photography, no literal illustration).
